Questions & Answers
Is plug mold listed for face up position to be installed in work surface applications Nec 406.5G
Hello,
Plugmold is approved for surface mount applications that are not considered recessed. Unless approved by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction, Plugmold should not be installed recessed.
406.5(F) Receptacles in Work Surfaces
Receptacles assemblies and GFCI receptacle listed for work surface or countertop applications shall be permitted to be installed in work surfaces.
406.5(G) Receptacle Orientation
Receptacles shall not be installed in a face-up position in or on a countertop surface or work surface unless listed for countertop or work surface applications.
406.5(H) Receptacles in Seating Areas or Other Similar Surfaces
In seating areas or similar surfaces, receptacles shall not be installed in a face up position unless the receptacle is any of the following:
(1) Part of an assembly listed as a furniture power distribution unit, if cord and plug connected.
(1) Part of an assembly listed either as household furnishings or as commercial furnishings.
(1) Listed either as a receptacle assembly for countertop applications or as a GFCI receptacle assembly for countertop applications.
(1) Installed in a listed floor box.
I would not recommend mounting a receptacle in the face up orientation, unless the product has been subjected to the UL spill test in one of the following standards;
UL 111 - The Standard for Multioutlet Assemblies
UL 1363 - The Standard for Relocatable Power Taps
UL 962A - The Standard for Furniture Power Distribution Units
The spill tests in these standards ensures that the products are designed to prevent shock hazards, in the event that liquid is spilled on the product.
Any product that has not been evaluated for conformance to the spill test requirements in the above standards should not be mounted with receptacles in a face-up orientation.
While the use of a GFCI breaker or device would provide a extra degree of protection, products evaluated and listed to have receptacles in the face up orientation provide the safest solution.

Are the strips paintable to match cabinetry?
Hello Pamela,
Yes, Plugmold can be painted to match. To paint Plugmold, first sand the surface lightly with fine 180-grit sandpaper. Apply primer on the surface and paint the raceway, using only oil-based enamel paint. Please note the outlets should not be painted.
Plugmold is available in ivory, gray, white, black or stainless steel which cannot be painted.
Thank you!

Does plug mold come in 18" sections?
Hello,
Plugmold does not come in 18" sections, however a longer piece can be shortened on the job site by following the installation instructions included with the product. If required, cut the base to length and carefully debur any cut ends before mounting. If the edge of any receptacle falls closer than 1 1/2" from the end of the unit, then that receptacle must be cut out to allow sufficient space for the installation of the end fitting.
Thank you-

Do you have plugmold that accepts hospital grade receptacles
Hi Gerry, Unfortunately the Plugmold systems cannot be made to accept hospital grade devices. The closest option is our 3000 series which can have devices field installed.
Thank you,

Do you have a product that is countertop surface rated or listed?
Hi Ryan,
The Plugmold products are surface mounted products. The location and orientation would be subject to approval by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). The AHJ must sign off/approve the installation to ensure it meets all applicable local and national codes. That being said there is nothing we offer that is specifically rated for countertops/kitchen use.
