Questions & Answers

Can this safely be used as a power outlet for an electric vehicle that plugs in and charges for hours at a time? The plug may be routinely removed as well.

Asked by: Paul
The 3854 is rated for 50 amp circuits which allow up to 80% (40 amps) continuous load and 100 % load (50 amps) for up to 4 hours. Devices are tested for heating at 100% rated load (50 amps) after undergoing 100 cycles of inserting and with drawing a plug making and breaking a 150% load (75amps), and 250 cycles prior to dielectric voltage break down test. An EV charger is highly unlikely to draw full rated current when first plugged in so you will never see the degradation of the receptacle and plug blades we see during testing, so the receptacle should function at lower temperatures than allowed by UL under normal use. The statement “routinely removed” is a vague number of insertions and withdrawals. If we assumed it was once a month that would be over 20 years to equate to our 250 cycles of abuse. Question - why would you “routinely remove” a plug of this size on such a large cord? Isn’t this connected to a permanently mounted charger?

Where to o find and adapter to connect to this so I can conecte it to me dryer

Asked by: Vicky
We do not offer an adapter for this receptacle. Our 3884 is our "dryer" surface mount receptacle. https://www.legrand.us/wiring-devices/outlets-and-receptacles/power-outlets/power-outlets/p/3884?text=3884
