Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fine box, but bring zip ties The box is fine. When installed it looks pretty good and has good ventilation. However, it takes some patience to mount in a finished wall. Because the wall was finished, I needed to remove the plastic mounting wings (you can break them off pretty easily). I also needed to carve away the drywall that covered the stud to get this box to sit flush because the lip is wider than standard 16” stud gaps. Finally, I had to drill holes in the side of the box to mount a couple lag bolts horizontally into the studs on each side. I really think this box should have come with side mounting holes but it’s easy to drill holes and the plastic is pretty stiff so there wasn’t any cracking or otherwise breakage in the process. BE WARNED: this box does not work well with Legrand mounting accessories. Accessories such as the shelves, swinging mount plates, and others have little black mounting pins.. those pins are garbage. They way they work is you press them into a mounting hole and when doing so it presses the inside out of the back which expands to hold the accessory in place - much like a drywall anchor works. EXCEPT..pulling on the plastic mounting pin then retracts the middle and it’s no longer expanded and slides right out. Should make for easy mount/dismount but the weight of a device on any accessories mounted this way just pulls the pins out. The force of gravity on a device mounted on a vertical plane will naturally put pressure on the pins and pull them away and out of their position. I also purchased a Legrand coax splitter to mount and the stationary arm that doesn’t need one of those black mounting pins, but rather sits inside the box’s mounting holes, just falls out. None of the various Legrand box accessories I purchased could be securely mounted in this box. This box is either not made for Legrand accessories, Legrand accessories weren’t made to work with it, or Legrand just has very extremely poor mounting hardware. Either way, with some patience, I was able to zip tie all of my gear to secure it. However, that’s a semi-permanent end result so if you’re looking for flexibility in either mounting the box in a finished wall or flexibility to rearrange your gear inside the box, I would caution you to not purchase this box.

Questions & Answers

Can I install these plastic enclosures into a finished house?

Asked by: Naranda
Yes. It requires modifications but can be done. My box is installed in a finished wall and mounted to the studs on each side with horizontal lag bolts. That required drilling holes in the side of the enclosure because it does not come with pre-drilled holes for that kind of installation. You also will want to physically break off the mounting wings on the sides so that you can push the box further into the wall (otherwise those wings will hit the drywall, preventing it from being installed flush). For sitting flush, I also had to carve away at the drywall around the box overlapping the studs because the lip of the box is wider than the box itself.  This box really wasn’t made with finished wall installation in mind. But with patience and tools you can retrofit it the way you want. Just be prepared for some DIY work and be sure you go slowly

The studs in my house are 2 feet apart, will I be able to mount this?

Asked by: Eric
No. This will fit a standard 16” stud gap. With “wings” that extend out on the side, it’s about 3-4 inches wider than that, but those wings are just for mounting.

If you cut a cavity this size in a SIP panel, will it compromise the structural integrity of the wall? it is a load-bearing wall.

Asked by: RGO
I'd also appreciate an answer, please. Thank you. I'm interested in cutting a load bearing stud in the basement of a 4 story house in order to install the On-Q panel, so I don't have to put it in the nearby closet and will save 80 dollars worth of cabling.

Is there a requirement for clearance to open the cabinet door. For access to the interior

Asked by: Corey Bolon
We do not have a front clearance measured. The door is approximately 16-17" wide so I would suggest a minimum clearance of 20" to open the door. You would want more ideally so you can stand in front of the unit while opening the door.

I have the OnQ 3050 box but have lost the screws to attach the trim/door to the box. What screws need to be used?

Asked by: Riskyguy
They are #6-20 Type AB screws. The screws are .600" in length, but if you get a 3/4" screw, you should be fine.
