What’s on the Horizon: Interior Design Trends in 2024
December 26, 2023
With the new year just around the corner, design experts are sharing their forecasts and predictions for the next big trends. And, these design trends forecast is a fun opportunity to get inspiration to redecorate or remodel the home. From colors to textures to design style trends, we’ve collected some of our favorite color and interior design trends for 2024.
Trends for Interior Design in the New Year
Home décor and style trends in 2024 are building off the current trends, with forecasters anticipating more bright hues, intentional living spaces, and creative design.
Rooms with a Purpose
Open concept living spaces have been a popular design style since the 1970s, but the tides are starting to shift as designers and homeowners are creating more intentional spaces with a dedicated purpose. Having dedicated rooms throughout the home for eating, relaxing, working, sleeping, exercising and more is expected to be the new norm in 2024.
Choose Character and Creativity
When is it not a trend to add character to your home’s décor? Well, it might be especially trendy in 2024. Cookie-cutter design is out of style so homeowners can truly show off their unique style and personality through their home’s décor. Instead of going with a design showroom look, incorporate vintage items and unique pieces that add playfulness and character to the home.
Sustainability
Showing some love for Mother Earth never goes out of style, so it’s fitting that sustainability trends are continuing to show up in 2024. From energy efficiency to repurposing furniture, sustainable home décor is the way of the future. Sustainability in home décor also shows up as made-to-order products meant to last a lifetime and opting for brands with environmental and social sustainability among their top priorities.
Bold Pops of Color
The trend of bold pops of paint color in the home on accent walls, furniture pieces, and even the ceiling will continue in the new year. An especially bold color trend will be color drenching, which is the process of painting everything the same color – the walls, trim and ceiling.
2024 Paint Color Trends
The biggest names in paint released the colors they expect to be trending in the new year, ranging from blue hues to statement neutrals. Here are a few of our favorite interior design color trends for 2024.
Warm chocolatey browns and rich earthy tones are becoming more popular, inviting a softer approach than stark black but a warmer tone than the greys we’ve been seeing for the past few years. Embracing a bit of a retro vibe with natural elements and rich hues, browns like Chocolate Cherry by Rust-Oleum can truly work with any style and secondary colors.
Dark Bronze is a rich chocolatey hue to pair with warm finishes.
Rich olive hues that are moody and dramatic are all the rage. These colors can complement earthy tones and easily style with natural finishes and modern décor alike. A color trend for the new year is Ironside from Dutch Boy Paint, which is just as cozy as it sounds.
Coffee is a metallic Wall Plate that will pair perfectly with earthy tones like olive and dark greens.
Although stark white can be fresh and clean, trends are showing that warmer whites like vanilla and cream are taking center stage in 2024. Glidden's color of the year, Limitless is a honey beige hue that is subtly yellow but acts as a neutral with a vintage flair.
Just slightly off-white, Satin Light Almond is a simple neutral that matches everything.
The Behr Paint color of the year is Cracked Pepper, a soft black color that mimics a matte finish. It’s an elegant and dramatic tone that pairs perfectly with other soft neutrals and metallic finishes. But since it’s neutral, it can work with just about any color scheme.
Satin Black is the perfect matte finish that is both soft and bold.
From light and dreamy to bold and uplifting, blue hues are certainly in trend for 2024. Numerous paint companies named a shade of blue as next year’s paint color. Krylon's Bluebird is playfully vintage and oh so vibrant, while colors like Skipping Stones from Dunn-Edwards, Thermal from C2, and Valspar’s Renew Blue are all soft shades.
Pale Blue has a light and airy finish to complement cool tones.
