The Wiremold 4000 Series Raceway is the workhorse of surface cable raceway systems. The multiple channel cable raceway can be divided for multi-service applications and is ideal for all applications requiring a large cable capacity dual service steel raceway. Commercial, institutional and industrial applications all benefit from the Wiremold 4000 Series rigid steel construction and durable Ivory ScuffCoat finish. The Wiremold 4000 Series Raceway is also ideal for municipalities that require either all steel construction or prohibit nonmetallic cable management systems.

Questions & Answers

Can the 4000 series raceways be installed horizontally with the devices up, for instance attached to the floor or other horizontal surface?

Asked by: Gene M
Hello Gene, The NEC covers the topic of receptacle orientation in Article 406. Below are the specific clauses that address your question. 406.5(F) Receptacles in Work Surfaces Receptacles assemblies and GFCI receptacle listed for work surface or countertop applications shall be permitted to be installed in work surfaces. 406.5(G) Receptacle Orientation Receptacles shall not be installed in a face-up position in or on a countertop surface or work surface unless listed for countertop or work surface applications. 406.5(H) Receptacles in Seating Areas or Other Similar Surfaces In seating areas or similar surfaces, receptacles shall not be installed in a face up position unless the receptacle is any of the following: (1) Part of an assembly listed as a furniture power distribution unit, if cord and plug connected. (1) Part of an assembly listed either as household furnishings or as commercial furnishings. (1) Listed either as a receptacle assembly for countertop applications or as a GFCI receptacle assembly for countertop applications. (1) Installed in a listed floor box. I would not recommend mounting a receptacle in the face up orientation, unless the product has been subjected to the UL spill test in one of the following standards; UL 111 - The Standard for Multioutlet Assemblies UL 1363 - The Standard for Relocatable Power Taps UL 962A - The Standard for Furniture Power Distribution Units The spill tests in these standards ensures that the products are designed to prevent shock hazards, in the event that liquid is spilled on the product. Any product that has not been evaluated for conformance to the spill test requirements in the above standards should not be mounted with receptacles in a face-up orientation. While the use of a GFCI breaker or device would provide a extra degree of protection, products evaluated and listed to have receptacles in the face up orientation provide the safest solution.
